The Chevrolet Volt is a new electric car that arrived in select markets in November 2010. It's a look into the future of automobiles, and that future is upon us, right here in Central Illinois. The Volt runs up to 40 miles on an electric charge, free of gas and emissions. Over 3/4 of Americans have a commute of 40 miles or less each day, thus The Volt could be perfect for their needs. It could probably help you or someone you know save money. After surpassing the 40-mile range the Volt uses gas to power a generator that produces more electric power. This extends its range to hundreds of miles on one tank of gas. You've never driven a Peoria Chevy car like this before.

The Battery

The battery in the Chevrolet Volt is a lithium-ion battery pack that was crafted specially for the Volt. It can be recharged even if it isn't completely depleted. Even if the battery runs out of charge while you're driving, a gas powered generator kicks in to recharge the battery and power the car. So you don't have to worry about being stranded in Peoria, Bloomington Normal, Pekin, Galesburg, or Springfield in your Chevy car. The gas generator gives this car an extended range that other electric cars can only dream of.

Charging

The Chevy Volt can be plugged into a standard 120V household outlet. If that isn't good enough for you, you can also install a 240V charging station in your garage. Welcome to the future of filling stations. The charging station would run off of a dedicated electrical circuit, similar to what is used for a clothes dryer. The standard household outlet will fully charge the Volt in about ten hours. A 240V outlet can take as few as four hours to fully charge the Volt. Even if the Volt isn't fully charged and you run out of electricity, have no worries about driving. The gas generator will come into play, extending your range up to 300 miles. Go ahead and take a trip in your Chevy Volt to Chicago, St. Louis, or even across the country. No other electric car can do that.

Why Electricity
The answer is simple - zero tailpipe emissions. Plus, most electricity is produced domestically, thus reducing our energy dependence on foreign oil. If the electricity is produced using solar, wind, biofuels, or hydro we can reduce our transportation emissions. It's also a lot cheaper to run your car using electricity instead of gas. We can have a cleaner Peoria just by purchasing and driving our cars more intelligently.

Cost

If you are in the majority of Americans who drive fewer than 40 miles in a day, it would cost about $1.50 a day for electricity. Essentially, it would be no different than running another household appliance. If you're smart about charging and do it during off peak hours (typically overnight), you could save even more money. Even if you travel beyond the 40 mile electric range and begin using the gas powered generator, the gas is used more efficiently than in a traditional engine.

Mobile Enabled
Using the new OnStar mobile application that will release alongside the Volt, you can control charging priorities, check your Volt battery charge, start your car remotely and unlock the doors - all from your mobile phone.
